63rd Annual NELA Christmas Parade and Winterfest

Random moment of the day: Listening to my overdue Berlitz French tape, disk 6 is titled “Je voudrais un deodorant” or “I would like some deodorant”. I wouldn’t make something like this up.
On to the parade: Residents enjoyed the 63rd Annual Northeast Los Angeles Christmas Parade & Winterfest this Sunday. I took my dog for a walk and enjoyed watching the kids scramble for candy. The turnout that I could see was pretty good with hundreds of people lining both sides of Figueroa between Avenues 57 & 58. The route began at Ave 56 and followed Figueroa all the way down to Cypress Park. As if I needed another reminder of how much I love the sense of community here, all I could think of was how many people’s heads would be exploding if three miles of Santa Monica Blvd west of the 405 was shut down for youth soccer teams and high school JROTC programs to march. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this was not (hell, the “Celebrity” Grand Marshals were DJs from a Spanish radio station), but everyone had fun nonetheless. I’ll avoid harping on what I saw and let the pictures do that for me. However, I don’t have pictures of them but it was great to see the participants from Franklin High School and Burbank Middle School (JROTC, Band, Drill Squad, etc.). It’s nice to be reminded that the kids who cause trouble are the exception, not the rule.
