Occidental Plaza

At long last, Highland/Glasell Park soccer-moms can get their ubiquitously bitter coffee without having to drive all the way to Eagle Rock. Yes, Starbuck’s, with its 15,000 stores in 44 countries has finally deemed us worthy of their coffee. Technically, I believe the address is in Glassell Park, but I wouldn’t have believed anyone who told me York Blvd. would have a Starbucks in the foreseeable future. Let’s hope the new Cafe de Leche isn’t run out of town by the 1,000 lb gorilla that is Starbucks.
Beyond a coffee shop that I don’t plan on ever visiting as I’d rather give my money to Miguel at Antigua or the guys at Casa Blue (which isstill open), Occidental Plaza is also sporting a Long’s Drugs that is already open, and an L&L Hawaiian Plate Lunch joint that actually has potential of receiving my business. Back in college, when I was a frequent visitor to our youngest state (for reasons I can’t disclose as I value my current relationship) Plate Lunch was a delicacy of the Hawaiian hoi polloi that I couldn’t find on the mainland. Now, these places proliferate, but it’s still nice to have one nearby. Personally, I’m looking forward to the Korean spare ribs, chicken katsu, and mac salad. Based on a recent drive-by, it looks like L&L and the Starbucks are opening imminently.

Actually… technically, the address is in Eagle Rock (not Glasell Park) since it’s still part of the 90041 Eagle Rock zip code. Also, I recently checked the Starbucks website to see if they posted an opening date (only found a “coming soon”) and they have it listed as an Eagle Rock store. So i guess in addition to the kookiness of a Starbucks coming to York Blvd, there’s also the distinction of Eagle Rock getting a SECOND Starbucks (the other one on Colorado & Eagle Rock Blvd.) Plus, this Glasell Park-adjacent Starbucks has a drive-thru to make my morning drives to work even more expensive!

Starbucks. Burnt beans on roasting. Burnt coffee on brewing. Is that why they cost twice as much as they should? This is some of the worst coffee in the world and a pretty bad company as well. I’ll stick to Peet’s, which not only has great coffee, but also cares more about their perceived image than they do about their bottom line (hence the reason that Irv’s Burgers is still operating in West Hollywood!).

I for one will be holding out for the organic coffee shop opening soon on York and Ave 50…

But I’ll take a Starbucks over a 99 cent store anyday.

I wish they would of opened on Fig instead of York. It’s a bit far out from most of HP to go just for coffee, but could be a nice stop after a trip to Fresh and Easy.

I don’t care for Starbucks but I can just imagine the traffic jam on the street when it opens. Especially w/only one lane on the street.

Hey - you may not want to admit to your “youngest state” connections, but I know about a fondness for Kaladi’s Coffee which I believe is only brewed in AK. ;o) PS i think this blog is great too!

The promise of this blog is better than the reality. There hasn’t been an update in nearly three weeks. I believe updates for June were made at the same frequency. Ultimately, checking in to see what’s new on York Blvd. (the website) leads to disappointment. No news is good news?

Yes but can I also purchase a sign there? I don’t think so!!!
I’ve been searching my whole life for a place where i can get espresso, free wifi and a custom sign all in one place. That search has finally ended at the Sign-A-Rama coffee house.
Um. Yeah. I predict an appearance on FAIL BLOG any day now…
