Highland Park

Highland Park

Militant Locationists light your torches and assemble at 1st and Spring.  The LA Times has dared to codify the disparate neighborhoods of the city in its Mapping L.A. project.  Where did our neighborhoods shake out?  Well, Highland Park got a nice extension north to Yosemite but was clipped a bit at the base of Mt. Washington on Ave 50.  Apparently, we’ve also subsumed Eagle Rock High School and the Eagle Rock Post Office.  The Times has even delved into the Eastside/Westside debate, including only the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, El Sereno, and Lincoln Heights in the Eastside.   Silverlake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz are classified as Central, while the Westside begins roughly at Fairfax.  The good news for those of you who take exception with any of these new boundaries is that they are open to changing them based on reader submissions.  Enjoy!

the main Eagle Rock post office is on Fig and Colorado, so thats still in Eagle Rock according to them… although Highland Park did apparently get about half of Occidental College!?

i have heard people say that the Northern boundary of Highland Park does indeed start at Yosemite, but according to the street signage its a bit further south

On a final note, can we donate that sliver along the southwestern border to Cypress Park? Id be willing to concede everything southwest of, say, Ave 50. I jest, i jest…

get some popcorn and check out the comments. this one from Eagle Rock (not Highland Park!) resident Adrienne Martinez-Hollingsworth is the BEST:

“I live at 907 Pine Grove- East of Figueroa in the hills of “Eagle Rock”. Our neighborhood, culturally, socio-economically and emotionally is Eagle Rock NOT Highland Park. My daughter will even attend Eagle Rock High School. Some people say that Eagle Rock residents must have 90041 zip codes- this is not true! I am about 2 blocks from THE EAGLE ROCK itself- how dare people try to consider it Highland Park! I applaud the way LA Times has drawn the boundaries… it certainly matches-up with what we were told be our Realtor!”

hahahahaha. because realtors never lie! i love her.

apparently many people dont realize that the schools youre zoned for have nothing to do with what neighborhood you actually live in

these LA hood boundary discussions are always fun! lotta morons out there

i think we need to light our torches and go to mrs. martinez-hollingsworth’s house on pine grove to confirm her worst suspicions about the people who live in highland park.

Sherry and Jennifer from Mount Angelus are close runners up for most wishful geographic thinking:

“Generally I think the map is very good. However, I do not think that Mount Angelus should be considered part of Highland Park. Mount Angelus has its own neighborhood feel, which is inconsistent with the surrounding areas of Highland Park, and is really viewed as a separate neighborhood by those that live there.”

    and

“Mount Angelus should not be considered part of Highland Park on the map. Mount Angelus has a different crime rate, neighborhood feel, property values, etc., than the rest of Highland Park”

I didn’t realize living on that little hill made people so much better than me. Accept the facts ladies, you live in Highland Park.

i live on a hill in highland park — but NOT in plebeian mount angelus, as if! — and tomorrow i plan to petition the city council to rename my hill Highland Heights Estates.

(p.s. check out the comments for van nuys, which is where i grew up in the SFV. the “Balboa Park” folks are just as nasty.)

Stupid yuppy Northeast Los Angeles Newbies…….Do you really believe that Eagle Rock is “all that”? I have smoked much weed, done tons of cocaine, drank millions of dollars in alcohol in Eagle Rock, I have seen people shot and killed in Eagle Rock just like in Highland Park…….What do you think? You’re better than the people who live in Highland Park? You are wrong……..Just another Breed of white, honky, stuck up hipsters.

I too live on a hill in Highland Park, but damn if I’m gonna deny that I live in Highland Park. My “hill” is still a part of HLP.
Are they serious? Mt. Angelus!? I’m not going to argue what is or is not Highland Park, but it bothers me that others feel so strongly about being “thrown in” to Highland Park as if being thrown into a dumpster. BS!! What’s the difference. If lines are drawn to create this section of “Mt. Angelus”, you’re still a hop, skip and jump away from Highland Park. Seriously people!!! Property values, Crime rate? They have to be kidding. Highland Park is a wonderful area as are the surrounding areas. Kudos to Vicky for suggesting an intelligent way to deal with part of the situation. Change the mentalities! They can contribute more to their and the neigboring hoods. The more negative mentalities, the worse the neighborhood is portrayed. They can continue to say they’re not part of it and are a separate community, but their “separate community” is still within walking distance from HLP. Shit, there go their property values.!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve always told people that my house was “Eagle Rock Adjacent”. ;-)

It was funnier in the 90s.
