From a continent away news of the Southwest Museum reopening trickled into my inbox. On July 19th, the museum’s signature tower will reopen from 2-4 PM, giving visitors a rare chance to look down the Arroyo Seco from the 102 year-old structure. The Times has written two pieces on LA’s oldest museum since I’ve left town. In the first, they cover the ongoing struggle between the Friends of the Southwest Museum and the Autry. The second, covers the reopening of the tower.

Hey, great, it looks like the Autry is finally going to re-open the Southwest Museum! Those two hours should be wonderful! Now, if we can only get them to fulfill their obligations under the merger agreement and actually reopen the Southwest Museum PERMANENTLY!

We’re all pulling for a permanent re-opening and written commitment to the life of the Southwest Museum as an independent campus and entity. We’ll see how Councilman Huizar includes Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition in the coming weeks.
