Steve Lopez in HP

Ξ July 15th, 2009 | → | ∇ Highland Park |

Just a few days after the New York Times reduced Highland Park to a two block stretch of York Blvd, it was nice to see Steve Lopez report on some positive work being done on the Figueroa side of town.  (Did anyone really expect the NYT to focus on a part of the neighborhood besides gastropubs, cafes, and art galleries?)   Instead of a sentimental “Bart’s People” piece about neighborhood violence and asking “won’t someone please think about the children!”, Lopez writes on former Doors drummer John Densmore and local writer Luis Rodriguez who are working to restore the mural across from Tacos La Estrella on Avenue 61 and Figueroa.  Hopefully the duo will turn their sites onto the former Raul Baltazar mural on the corner of Piedmont and Figueroa that has been tagged over again.
